The reproductive health and sexual rights of young people were in focus this Wednesday, at the first meeting of the ECOS Cooperative project «Talking About This: Cooperation and Participation for the Sexual and Reproductive Rights of Youth in the Algarve». This first meeting, which took place in the delegation of Faro from the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth (IPDJ), brought together around 30 Health, Education and Youth departments and organizations in the central Algarve.

The main objectives of "Falar Disso" are "cooperation between organizations from different sectors and the promotion of the active participation of young people in the development of local and regional measures and strategies in the area of ​​Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights".

In addition to a working meeting with partners, the project was officially and publicly launched, in an initiative in which the director of the Central Health Centers Group (CES) Carlos Queimado, the president of APF – Association for Family Planning António Filhó, the president of ECOS Bruno António and the coordinator of «Falar Disso» Sofia Martins, from the same cooperative.

For Sofia Martins, «this is a challenging and extremely relevant project for the region, which aims to meet the challenges faced by specific or more vulnerable groups».

"It is extremely motivating to realize that there is a huge interest on the part of entities and organizations in offering effective responses that can have a real impact on the lives of young people," he added.

The meeting that kicked off the project was attended by leaders and professionals from different organizations and departments, including school health teams, Committees for the Protection of Children and Youth (CPCJ), social action divisions, volunteer networks, offices of youth support, health education coordinators and youth from various associations and activist groups.

"During the afternoon, we tried to define the priority areas of intervention in the Sexual and Reproductive Health of young people in the Algarve, map the main challenges and issues in this area and start the work and communication between partners for the effective implementation of the project", he described ECOS, in a press release.

This event also included an exhibition of photographic and drawing works by young artists and was attended by Amnesty International with its recent campaign “My Body, My Rights”.

The “Falar Disso” project is promoted by the Algarve Cooperation and Development Education Cooperative, in partnership with APF. Currently, it also has the involvement of the IPDJ Algarve, ACES Central, DGEstE – DSRA, Academic Association of the University of Algarve, School Groups, CPCJ, projects of the Escolhas Program, municipalities and «a number of other entities and organizations from the central councils of the region of the Algarve».
