The Support Groups for Mental and Child Health in the Algarve will continue to receive help from the D. Estefânia Pediatric Hospital in the area of ​​child psychiatry. The Algarve Regional Health Administration (ARS) and the Lisbon hospital this Tuesday renewed a collaboration protocol, with a view to maintaining this support.

«Right now there are eight Child Mental Health Support Groups working in the Health Centers of the Algarve Region with the objective of providing support to children and young people, in close collaboration and articulation with the Pediatric Hospital of Dona Estefânia, in Lisbon, covering the entire Algarve region and serving as an example at the national level», refers the Algarve entity, in a press release.

The Child Mental Health Support Groups (GASMI) teams, created in 2001, are made up of psychologists, family doctors, nurses, social workers, and therapists from the Health Centers, supervised by a child and adolescent psychiatry consultant from the Department of Psychiatry for Children and Adolescents, Hospital Pediátrico de Dona Estefânia.

In practice, they develop prevention and promotion programs, aimed at families at risk with young children, using home visits and focused on promoting parenting skills throughout the Algarve, thus enabling the screening, assessment and care of children's cases/ at-risk families with mild psychopathology, referring more complex psychopathology situations to the Pediatric Hospital of Dona Estefânia.
