can you imagine the world sem mwomen? Civilians and other associations do not! That's why they decided to reunite cin women to share their experiences, their achievements, their lives. Because the world is made by women too!

This will be a different way of marking International Women's Day tomorrow, Saturday, March 8, at 14 pm, bringing together 00 extraordinary women in the Municipal Museum Auditorium. Faro. Admission is free and men can – and should – participate.

This is an initiative of Civis – Association for the Deepening of Citizenship, of the Project Paths for Equality of the Doina Association and of the Tenente Palace, with the high sponsorship of the CIG – Commission for Gender Equality.

Inês Morais Pereira, president of Civis, explained, in an interview to RUA FM, that this is a different meeting from the usual one in these days of Women, because «there won't be any strippers men, there will be no lunches or dinners». There will be only one hundred extraordinary women, Portuguese and foreign, of various ages and professions, all residing in the Algarve, who will share their stories, their lives, their achievements with the audience.

Inês explains that, "although there are men and women who feel that it is no longer necessary to celebrate International Women's Day", there are still important issues to be debated. One is wage inequality, another is domestic violence.

“Wage inequality exists, there is a 16% difference between what men and women earn. And over 85% of domestic violence cases are about women. These issues have to be talked about!”

Thus, one of the objectives of this Saturday's session, which is intended to be «relaxed and informal», is «to reinforce the merit of the work that the woman does: what she does at home, as a mother, daughter, granddaughter, caregiver, what she does in her profession , which he does in the associations».

The president of Civis also highlights the fact that women, despite their weight in society, are still not properly represented in "places of exercise of power". “There are many women in the intermediate places, but in the decision places they are not there. And why is this happening?”

walk towards equality

Marta Costa Lima, responsible for the «Paths to Equality» project at Associação Doina, explained that this project, which works with immigrants and Portuguese, aims to «promote equality and combat gender violence, especially violence. domestic violence, which is of great concern in Portugal».

“In 2013, 33 women victims of domestic violence died in Portugal. Every other week, there was a woman who was murdered by her spouse, ex-spouse or partner,” he added.

However, despite the cold reality of numbers, Marta Costa Lima considers that “there is a greater openness among men to this issue, namely in the Caminhos para a Equality Project. In the training actions, there is now a more balanced distribution of enrollments between women and men».

Inês Morais Pereira stresses, by the way, that "this path cannot be made without men" and therefore invites them to be present at this Saturday's session and to intervene in the debate.

In addition, he admits, “men are also discriminated against by women, for example in the matter of parenthood. Men want to be fathers, but women deny them this right».

Despite this, she emphasizes, women suffer even more discrimination. And he recalls, once again, the issue of equal pay, saying that “a woman has to work 59 more days a year to earn the same salary as a man. It's been almost two months!».

Em Faro, «we brought together a hundred women, but sometimes the feeling we have is that this is a world without women!», concludes the young lawyer from Faro and president of Civis.
