The PS/Faro this week accused the Chamber of Faro to allow the Ribeira das Lavadeiras to become «an open sewer», but the municipality guarantees that the water that flows into the Ria Formosa is «clear and crystalline» and that all wastewater in the municipality is sent to the WWTP.

On Wednesday the socialists claimed, in a press release, that “the Ribeira das Lavadeiras, at the entrance of Faro, is transformed into an open sewer line, running freely to the Ria Formosa, despite the official entities, namely the Municipality of Faro and the municipal company Fagar, have been aware of that situation for at least two years».

This situation had already been the subject of news in 2012. At the time, the municipality guaranteed that the water that was seen running from a rain pipe to the stream, next to the roundabout of the EN 125 at the exit of that city towards Olhão, was from the Hospital of Faro and was not contaminated.

This situation, clarified the office of the president of the Chamber of Faro, was resolved "over a year ago". “We were there today [Thursday] in the morning, with technicians from FAGAR and the flowing water is clear and crystal clear,” said the same source.

The opposition socialist councilors of the Faro local authority say they were called to the site by residents and merchants in that area and that they found "a stream, whose name refers to the cleanness and quality of the water that would have allowed washing clothes there in the past, now transformed into an immense pool of sewage, garbage and nauseating smell». The cause would be, according to the PS, "a damaged emissary".

The local authority denies that there is contamination, but admits that there is "some odor", which it associates "to the stagnation of the waters". «There is no wastewater running in the open to Ria Formosa or to any other location in the municipality of Faro», assured the office of the president.

The PS, for its part, accuses the executive of “environmental negligence”, which it extends to the previous executive led by Macário Correia, elected by the same coalition. They also called for «the immediate intervention of the regional services of the Ministry of Environment to notify the PSD/CDS majority, in order for them to act in accordance with their competences and responsibilities, removing them from the lethargy in which they find themselves and putting an end to this real environmental attack».

The executive, led by Rogério Bacalhau, argues that it has become Faro “an environmentally friendly council”.
