The Algarvian corporal Militão dos Santos, who was part of the first column of the 7th Cavalry Regiment sent to detain the forces of Salgueiro Maia, in Terreiro do Paço, and who, almost immediately, joined the Revolution, will remember what he lived on the 25th of April 1974, on Monday, the 31st, in Loulé.

This is the opening session of the “Direct Testimonies” cycle that, throughout the year, will bring to Loulé and Quarteira, soldiers with direct and operational intervention in the April Revolution. Some known, others that few know, like this Corporal Militão dos Santos.

The session is scheduled for the Sophia de Mello Breyner Library Auditorium, in Loulé, from 21 pm, organized by the Municipal Committee for the 30th Anniversary of the 40th of April.

“He will be present at the Sophia Library and talk about his experience and his choice. So, live story», explains the Commission.

Emeritus journalist Adelino Gomes and photojournalist Alfredo Cunha will also be present, who recorded the dramatic moments of the Terreiro do Paço saga.

On the occasion, the two great reporters presented the album “Os Meninos dos Tanques”, released a few days ago in a public session in the atrium of the Torreão Poente of Terreiro do Paço. Book still fresh with an introduction and 32 interviews by Adelino Gomes and photographs by Alfredo Cunha (Porto Editora).

The theme of the album, as the title indicates, is limited to face-to-face in the center of Lisbon between columns of the Army Cavalry Arm.

The interviewees are elements of the military and militia members directly involved in the confrontation: officers, sergeants, soldiers, trainees and cadets (with two exceptions: the “civilian” Fernando Brito e Cunha and Natércia Maia, representing, in some way, the women of the conspirators).

They tell their respective story on the ground and respond to a small survey, through which we learn about the personal path of life of each one of them and the way they look at Portugal today.

The biggest news is that Adelino Gomes gives voice (for the first time) to cables and soldiers who were in the armored vehicles sent to crush the revolution, among which is the mythical pointing cable that did not obey Brigadier Junqueira dos Reis' order to do so. fire on Mayan Willow.

Much of what is not on the album will be said in direct testimony at the Sophia Library.
