The Working Group for High Added Value Infrastructures (GT IEVA) is promoting a series of public discussion sessions on the infrastructure plan considered a priority for the country's economic and social development.

In this context, the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Committee organizes a public session, on February 28, at 10:00 am, at the CCDR Algarve Auditorium, in Faro.

The 30 infrastructures considered to be priorities by that Working Group involve, in public, community and private funds, an investment of around 5085,7 million euros, 25% of which is borne by public coffers. In this list of priorities, most refer to maritime-port infrastructure.

The improvement of maritime access and facilities in the ports of Portimão and Faro (55 million) and the modernization and electrification of the Algarve Line (55 million) are the two only investments planned for the Algarve region in the list of 30 priority projects.

In fact, of the 5100 million euros foreseen for these 30 priority projects, only 110 million are earmarked for investments in the Algarve, that is, 2,1% of the total. In terms of priorities, both projects are placed in half of the lowest priority: the works in the ports of Portimão and Faro in 20th place and the modernization of the railway in 26th.

In addition, the list leaves out important works, such as the completion of the EN125 requalification works, such as the Sul Informação reported first hand. Jorge Botelho, president of AMAL – Algarve Intermunicipal Community, in an interview with our newspaper and RUA FM, even considered it "a shame" that the requalification of the EN125 has been left out of the priority investments in infrastructure of the Government for 2014.

Appointed in August 2013 by the Government, the IEVA working group is composed of 19 entities and led by the president of the Business Association of Portugal, José Eduardo Carvalho, and aimed to study national priorities, with regard to infrastructure, for the period between 2014 and 2020, with specific criteria in the definition of priority projects, such as the framework in the national transport policy, competitiveness and efficiency, intermodality, financing and financial sustainability and level of materialization of the infrastructure.

The final report, produced after three and a half months of study, revealed a total of 89 projects at a cost of almost €13.500 million. The list ended up being reduced to 30 projects, with emphasis on those that fall within the maritime-port sector.
