The mayor of Faro Last Friday Rogério Bacalhau visited the Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP) of Faro Source and Faro Northwest, at the invitation of Águas do Algarve.

An initiative of the multi-municipal public company whose objective was “to make known the facilities of both WWTPs, and how they work, as well as the clarification of some questions that were raised by the mayor of Farense”.

About two weeks ago, the environmental association Quercus went public require the construction of a new WWTP that will serve Faro and Olhão and allow to disable the stations named «Faro Nascente” and “Olhão Poente”, which they consider as major sources of pollution in the Ria Formosa.

Águas do Algarve revealed to our newspaper that it is already working on the process of the new WWTP and that it could be ready by the end of 2017, if everything goes as planned.

All clarifications requested by Rogério Bacalhau were given in person to the Faro local authority, by the Administrator of Águas do Algarve Isabel Soares, who accompanied the visit with Directors Joaquim Freire and João de Sousa and several technicians who work in these facilities.

The controversy is related to Faro and Olhão, but visits by mayors to the region's WWTP will not be limited to these two municipalities, the public company guaranteed.

«Considering the excellent relations existing between the company and all our shareholders and customers [the Algarve authorities], and in order to promote a better knowledge of what the company is doing in the Algarve, with the consequent investment already made of several hundred million euros, we are promoting visits with all municipalities in the region to our infrastructure (water and sanitation)», he announced.
