Maria Keil from the city of Silva will be one of the personalities honored by CTT Correios de Portugal in the series “Vultos da História e da Cultura Nacional” of the 2014 Philatelic Plan.

The memory of this artist who marked the panorama of Portuguese arts in the XNUMXth/XNUMXst centuries, deceased in June 10st, 2012, will thus be perpetuated through postal correspondence that will circulate all over the world.

The issuance of this seal was suggested by the Municipality of Silves to CTT that annually renew its philatelic plan and that, in addition to its base issue, issue series with special themes, which aim to make known the history of our country, the characters that most stood out in culture, politics, sports or science and national and international events of great importance.

Born in the city of Silves, Maria Keil left behind a vast and multifaceted work: painting, especially portraits; publicity; attempts to renovate wood carving for furniture and furniture design; inner decoration; cards for tapestries; fresco murals; sets and costumes for ballets; stamps; tiles (Metropolitano de Lisboa, Av. Infante Santo, TAP de Paris and New York, União Elétrica Portuguesa, Vilamoura Casino, Luanda Airport, etc.); and illustration.

The renovation of the S. Sebastião da Pedreira Metro station, in Lisbon, was one of the last works he carried out.

His memory will also remain alive in the Municipal Library of Silves, where since September 3, 2009, a self-portrait (painted in 1941) has been displayed in the room that bears his name. facsimile of the letter he wrote and which describes the reasons why he offered this work to the Municipality.

João Hogan (master engraver and painter), Joaquim Namorado (poet and mathematician), António da Costa (poet and painter) and Sebastião e Silva (mathematician) are other figures that will be honored in the series “Vultos da História e da Cultura Nacional” .

In the 2014 philatelic plan, CTT will also continue the theme The Route of Cathedrals, which will end this year's tour of all national cathedrals. In this theme, the Cathedral of Silves, whose seal was already launched in 2012, has not been forgotten.
