The “Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen” Literary Contest is a joint initiative of the Municipal Councils of Lagos and Loulé, and its main objective is to encourage and promote the reading of the works of this well-known poet. The initiative is now in its ninth edition.
This competition, jointly organized by the Municipal Libraries of Lagos and Loulé (Dr. Júlio Dantas and Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, respectively), aims to promote the name and extensive work of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen.
The awards ceremony takes place on a rotating basis in one of the two libraries, on the weekend closest to April 23, when World Book Day is celebrated.
In this edition, the delivery is scheduled to take place in Lagos, on April 25th.
According to the respective regulations, works of poetry, prose or essays, in Portuguese, and illustrations (original and unpublished up to the date of the final decision) that focus on the literary work of the writer Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen are admitted to the competition. . The works must indicate the original work on which they reflect.
All students who attend Schools of the 3rd cycle of Basic Education and Schools of Secondary Education, or equivalent, in the Algarve region can submit works.
The works must be delivered by the 15th of March (inclusive) to the Municipal Library of Lagos or the Municipal Library of Loulé (post date).
There will be a single jury for the two types of competition, consisting of a representative of the Municipality of Lagos, a representative of the Municipality of Loulé, a representative of the General Directorate of Book, Archives and Library, a representative of DREALG – Regional Directorate of Education of the Algarve and a representative of FNAC.
Students in the 3rd cycle of basic education and secondary education awarded will be entitled to a gift card, offered by FNAC.
Both for the poetry, prose and essay category, and for the illustration category, of each group (primary and secondary education), the following prizes are given: gift card, valued at 50 euros + participation certificate.
The schools attended by the awarded students are offered books as a contribution to the School Libraries.
If the jury decides, there is the possibility of awarding honorable mentions. All winners will also have the right to books and a diploma of participation.
The Municipal Councils of Lagos and Loulé are the holders of all works, reserving for themselves the rights to disclose or publish them. The works may also be part of exhibitions to be organized in the premises of the Municipal Libraries of the two municipalities.
