The new rector of the University of Algarve António Branco will take office on Wednesday, December 18, the day the institution will also celebrate its 34 years of existence. The Ceremony will take place in the Grand Auditorium of the UAlg Campus of Gambelas, at 16:30 pm.

The session is public and open to the entire community and will, of course, include the inauguration speech of the new rector, in addition to the farewell lecture by João Guerreiro, who will hand over the position to him.

Another highlight was the delivery of the «Teacher Emeritus Title», which distinguishes full professors and main coordinators, retired or retired, for the relevant contribution made to the advancement of science and culture and for the services provided to the community. This year's winners will be Adriano Pimpão and Maria Teresa Dinis.

 

About the new dean António Branco:

Antonio Branco he was born in Malange (Angola), on January 16, 1961. Between 1979 and 1983, he was an actor at Teatro do Mundo (in Lisbon). In 1989, he graduated in Modern Languages ​​and Literatures from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lisbon. After having worked as a teacher of Portuguese and French in the 3rd cycle of Basic Education and Secondary Education, between 1984 and 1990, and having been a trainee assistant at the Department of Portuguese Studies at the University of East Asia (Macau, 1990- 1991), began, in September 1991, to teach at the University of Algarve as a guest assistant, in the field of Literary Studies. In January 1999, he obtained a Ph.D. in Literature (Medieval Portuguese Literature) from the University of Algarve, and as a result became assistant professor of the Exact and Human Sciences Unit. Since 2003, he has been an associate professor in Didactics of Languages ​​and Literatures at the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences, having made his aggregation there in Communication, Culture and Arts, in June 2012, more precisely in the area of ​​Theatre, where he teaches and currently investigates.

At UAlg, he has held several management positions, namely: Director of the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences, Director of the UAlg Library and Central Archive and Coordinator of the Center for Research in Arts and Communication. He was also an elected member of the General Council (between 2009 and 2013) and Director of the Masters and Doctorate in Communication, Culture and Arts.

 

About the recipients of the «Teacher Emeritus Title»:

Adriano Pimpão he was Dean of UAlg from 1998 to 2006 and played a very important role in the creation of the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Medicine. During his tenure, not only the areas of Health Sciences were created, but also of Biomedical Sciences and, later, the Integrated Masters in Medicine was approved at the ministerial level.

Maria Teresa Dinis he spent 22 years at UAlg and, even after his retirement, remains active in the leadership of its research group. Member of the Marine Science Center since its creation, it has participated in several projects, in the last decade alone, with national, European and private funding. She has published over a hundred articles, some of which have the status of “citation classic”, having acquired an international status with her peers and the industry, with whom she has always interacted in her research and as a consultant. A lot has contributed for UAlg to be, currently, a reference institution in the Marine Sciences.
