Alexandra Gonçalves, adjunct professor and researcher in the area of ​​Tourism at the University of Algarve and former Councilor for Culture at the Chamber of Faro, has just been chosen by the oversight secretary of state as the new regional director of Culture in the Algarve.

The name of Alexandra Rodrigues Gonçalves was one of the three that were nominated by CreSAP, the Commission for Recruitment and Selection for Public Administration, to the Secretary of State for Culture Jorge Barreto Xavier to fill the position, after the public tender process for filling it out. of the position, coordinated by CreSAP. The final choice, however, is entirely political and the responsibility of the Secretary of State.

Alexandra Gonçalves recently completed her PhD in Tourism at the University of Évora, having managed to do her PhD even while she was Councilor for Culture at the Chamber of Faro. Her thesis was on “Material Culture, Musealization and Tourism: Valuing the tourist experience in national museums”.

In addition to Alexandra Gonçalves for the DRC Algarve, two other new regional directors were also appointed for the North (António Manuel Torres da Ponte) and Alentejo (Ana Paula Amendoeira), as well as being reappointed the head of the Center (Celeste Amaro).

Celeste Amaro was the only responsible person reappointed from the four regional departments of Culture in the country.

Following the competitions and the final choice of the Secretary of State, Aurora Carapinha (DRC Alentejo) and Paula Araújo Silva (DRC Norte) leave the positions previously occupied by Dália Paulo, of the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve.

Who is Alexandra Gonçalves?

Alexandra Gonçalves, 41, holds a PhD in Tourism from the University of Évora. Her doctoral thesis had the theme “Material Culture, Musealization and Tourism: Valuing the tourist experience in national museums”, having been done under the supervision of Professor Doctor Francisco Ramos (University of Évora) and co-supervision of Professor Doctor Carlos Costa (University of Aveiro).

Earlier, on February 15, 2002, Alexandra Mestre had completed her Masters in Cultural Heritage Management, by the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences, University of Algarve and University of Paris-8, with the theme «The cultural component of Tourism urban as a complementary offer to the 'sun and beach' product: the case of Faro and Silves», under the supervision of the same professor Carlos Costa, from the University of Aveiro.

The new regional director of Culture has a degree in Marketing, completed in 1997 at the University of Algarve.

Has several articles and research papers published in the field of tourism,
cultural heritage and events, including the publication of his Master's thesis.

As a professional experience, he started by working in the Travel and Tourism sector, namely in the Algarve Tourism Region, in the General Directorate of Land Operations at TAP and in the President Travel Agency.

Since 1 September 1997, he has been teaching in the area of ​​Tourism, at the University of Algarve, at the School of Management, Hospitality and Tourism, where he has been, since March 2002, a lecturer equivalent to the Associate Professor, of the Center for Tourism, of the University do Algarve, at ESGHT.

During this period, she held positions of director of the Center for Tourism and Social Sciences and was director of the Superior Course of Tourism. He has taught Masters in Marketing, Tourism, as well as Event and Congress Organization.

Between October 2009 and September 2013 she was a councilor of the City Council of Faro, being responsible, among others, for the areas of Culture, Social Action, Health, Advertising, Economy and Tourism.
