This week, GNR and the association Safe Communities Algarve promoted a seminar on the «Safe Residence Programme», which aims to guarantee the safety of the foreign community residing in the Algarve, namely those who live in more isolated places.

The initiative brought together fifty local inhabitants, mostly citizens of foreign nationality, in the Casa do Povo of Moncarapacho and «was the main objective of strengthening the feeling of security in that community, making it more aware of the need to take preventive measures with a view to to reduce the chances of being the target of theft or other crimes”.

«Pamphlets alluding to the Program were distributed to those present, and those targeted did not shy away from showing their satisfaction and appreciation for the initiative, recognizing the importance and merit of the work developed by these two entities in the proximity between the GNR and the community and in the maintenance of the much desired feeling of security, and the interest of the local population in this Program was evident and has been increasing», revealed the GNR, in a press release.

The session was attended by not only members of the Special Programs Section of the Republican National Guard of Faro, but also David Thomas, founder of the Association. Together, they explained the objectives and features of this program.

The «Safe Residence Program» was created by the Guarda Nacional Republicana at the beginning of 2010, as a response to the increase in violent crime and a feeling of insecurity resulting from a wave of violent robberies that occurred in an area of luxurious, isolated and scattered residences located in the interior. of the Municipality of Loulé.

Difficulty in accessing and locating homes, due to the lack of reference points in the field and the language barrier, made it impossible to communicate well between victims and the security forces, and therefore a quick response from them.
To this end, a team was created to put into practice the Safe Residence Program, with the aim of reducing crime and restoring the feeling of security of that specific population.

This program's main guidelines are, among others, to regularly contact citizens who adhere to the program, give safety advice, assess vulnerabilities of homes for possible reinforcement of patrolling, georeferencing of homes, a hotline that works 24 hours a day , operated by multi-lingual military personnel and gathering information on potential criminal movements.
