Faro it wants to be on the “map” of international relations and has invested in bilateral contacts with several states. In the last two weeks, Faro bet on diplomatic initiatives to bring the Algarve capital closer to Argentina, Ukraine, Angola and Gibraltar.
The most popular initiative was the debut of the Gibraltar national team in a game held at the Estádio Algarve, which played the first official game since its creation and association with UEFA, last May. The sports venue of the municipalities of Faro and Loulé will be the home of this team, until the completion of the works in progress in the only stadium in the territory.
This was also the most recent bilateral relations initiative. Before, Faro welcomed the ambassadors to Portugal from Ukraine and Argentina, on 13 and 15 November, respectively. At these meetings, the themes of economic cooperation and trade were on the table.
Ambassador of the Republic of Ukraine Oleksandr Nykonenko, accompanied by religious representatives of the Ukrainian community in Faro, «showed its firm intention to strengthen the bonds of friendship and economic, commercial and cultural cooperation between both peoples», which, in the case of Farenses, involves twinning with the Ukrainian region of Ivano-Frankivsk, established in 2011. Initiatives that the President of the Chamber of Faro Rogério Bacalhau wants to take the opportunity to «deepen and develop» a path opened in 2008, the year in which the municipality of Faro signed a twinning protocol with the Comodoro Rivadavia region. Faro wants, in this case, to bet "in the fields of culture, sport, education and investment".
"Argentina wants, in this phase of consolidation of its economic recovery, to boost and raise the level of bilateral trade, which is still low", illustrated the Chamber of Faro.
In the case of Algarve and Faro, Jorge Arguello highlighted the potential of tourist exchange that can happen, recognizing that this visit «served to identify areas that can be worked on in the near future».
In the same week he received the top dignitaries from Ukraine and Argentina, Rogério Bacalhau was also present at the celebrations of the 38th Anniversary of the Independence of the People's Republic of Angola, which took place in a hotel in the municipality of Albufeira.
