The trimaran “Spindrift 2”, holder of the world speed record, chose the Marina de Portimão as a training base between 9 and 16 October, with a view to participating in the Route of Discoveries.

The objective of “Spindrift 2” is to wait in Portimão for a window of good time to try to beat the record of the Route of Discovery, which currently lasts seven days, ten hours, 58 minutes and 53 seconds, at an average speed of 21,70 knots, and since 2007 it has been held by Franck Cammas' “Groupama 3” vessel.

The crew consists of 12 experienced sailors, led by skypers Dona Bertarelli and Yann Guichard, whose most recent success was their triumph in the Fastnet Race last August.

As soon as the weather conditions allow, the “Spindrift 2” will depart from Cadiz, in the south of Spain, towards San Salvador, in the Bahamas, thus following the itinerary followed by Christopher Columbus when he discovered the New World, in 1492.

The choice of Marina de Portimão by the “Spindrift 2” team did not happen by chance and is related to its privileged location, as well as the exceptional characteristics of sea and wind existing at this time of year, well known to some of its inhabitants. crew.

The presence of the trimaran in the city attests once again to Portimão's potential for water sports, which has already brought to these waters, for example, the mythical Dutch boat “ABN Amro”, before winning the Volvo Ocean Race.

In addition to being chosen to train some of the most prestigious crews in nautical sports, Marina de Portimão has regularly hosted world-class events, such as the Audi Med Cup, the Portimão Portugal Match Cup, the Portimão Global Ocean Race, the European Windsurfing Championship or the World of Powerboats, among others.
