Joaquina Matos (PS), elected mayor of Lagos on Sunday, with 34,93% of the vote, chooses “strengthening the social network” as the priority of her leadership of the municipality.

"We will know what the most urgent needs are, pay close attention to social support, but always working in a network with the county's institutions, which are many and of great quality," said the new mayor in an interview with Sul Informação.

Priority will also be given to «supporting the local economy», «studying a lighter taxation, friendlier for Small and Medium Enterprises, namely restaurants and local commerce». In this sector, Joaquina Matos also promises «great attention to the «valuation of the sea».

Great attention will also be given to clubs and associations, "in the sense that none of them has to close its doors, because all are needed in a city as modern as Lagos."

The mayor stated that she was aware of the municipality's financial difficulties, namely the «commitments that the Town Hall assumed with the PAEL», but assured that the municipality will not remain idle.

As for the economic situation in Lagos, Joaquina Matos underlined “the summer was good, in terms of tourism, with more jobs, more work, more money. But what about winter? Our tourism remains very seasonal and that is something we have to work on».

The election of Joaquina Matos guaranteed the PS the maintenance of the Câmara de Lagos, thus succeeding Júlio Barroso in the position. Despite everything, underlines the new president, "it was a difficult victory, won with a lot of work, with great seriousness, thanks to the work of teams of very committed people."

The difficulty has a special translation in the Municipal Assembly, where socialists no longer have an absolute majority. But that's something that doesn't scare the new president. "This situation will force negotiation, more dialogue, to seek consensus," admitted Joaquina Matos.

But, he also underlined, "in these difficult times, this is what is expected: to reach a consensus to find the best solutions, with everyone's help."

The inauguration of the new municipal executive and the other municipal bodies in Lagos is scheduled for October 14th.
