On the 16th of November, a Saturday, the Lagos Live Science Center (CCV) will host the workshop «Talking Science – Narratives and theatrical techniques for the oral communication of Science», an initiative aimed at scientists and teachers. help improve your oral communication. The training will be directed by a scientist and an actress and director and runs from 8 am to 19 pm.

«This course will focus on the development of oral communication techniques applied to the transmission of scientific knowledge to a non-specialist audience. Stories construction techniques will be used, seeking to identify key ideas and fundamental concepts, whose presentation will be made in a contextualized manner and looking for communication bridges with the audience. The territories of voice and body will also be explored, so that the content of the message is conveyed in the most efficient and effective way», revealed the organization, in charge of the CCV of Lagos.

It will be these skills that the scientist Joana Lobo Antunes and the actress Magda Novais will try to convey, throughout the eight hours of training. “The practice of theater improvisation techniques will serve to increase confidence on stage and reduce anxiety associated with public exposure, while improving the ability to develop empathy with the audience”, he describes.

The program is divided into two phases: «Preparation of the speech. Choice of theme, approach, style, prose", in which participants "will start by finding a short, clear and striking way to define the theme they intend to present to a lay audience" and "Scenic work and improvisation, applied to the presentation of the text developed”, where “exercises and theatrical improvisation games will be used to develop body awareness, voice placement and the assessment of verbal and non-verbal communication skills at the service of scientific discourse”.

«This is not a course of representation, but the development of communication skills and involvement with the audience, being able to adapt the prepared speech to the responses (positive or negative) of the audience. The presentations will be filmed and compared with the work presented before the work session», explained the CCV of Lagos.

Those interested in participating in the atelier must register by 13:14 on November 15th. Each participant will have to pay 3 euros and bring a presentation of up to XNUMX minutes from home on a scientific topic.

Joana Lobo Antunes
With an academic background in the life sciences, in addition to obtaining a PhD in Organic Chemistry, he has joined the arts of representation with science communication in workshops and courses in storytelling and improvisation for researchers and teachers since 2006. He currently has a post-doctoral project in Promotion of Science at the Institute of Chemical and Biological Technology and the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences.

Magda Novais
Degree in Theater, Training of Actors and Stage Directors, from the Superior School of Theater and Cinema in 2006, she has been active as an actress, stage director and trainer in dramatic expression since 1999. She has collaborated in training in theatrical techniques for the oral communication of science, ITQB and FCSH.
