No, it is not a real submarine, nor is it anchored outside the Portimão Museum. But the new nucleus of the «Ocean Revival», installed in a wing of the Museum's former underground cistern, in fact recreates the interior of a submarine, to take those who cannot dive into the depths of the sea to discover that innovative project.

The new center was inaugurated last Friday, opening the commemorations of the European Heritage Days in Portimão. And on that same day there were dozens of people, including some children, who were able to enter the submarine and peek through its virtually open hatches to the Ocean Revival Underwater Park in Portimão.

Without even getting their feet wet, visitors to this new center can learn about the history of the sunken ships about three miles from Praia de Alvor, the history of the Ocean Revival project itself and also follow the evolution of marine life in the artificial reefs.

“There are five LCDs, each dedicated to its theme, which can be looked at through the hatches opened in the submarine, as well as parts taken from sunken ships», explained Luís Sá Couto, main mentor of «Ocean Revival». All to show a little more of the history of sunken vessels, information intended for those who do not dive, but also for the divers themselves.

Rear Admiral Nunes Teixeira, representative of the Chief of Staff of the Navy, also present at the inauguration, highlighted the «immense pleasure of the Navy in cooperating in the Ocean Revival project», of which «the nucleus at the Portimão Museum is an important complement» .

O submarine Museum of Portimão can be visited during the normal opening hours of that structure, being another element of its permanent exhibition.

To what Sul Informação he learned, there are already scheduled visits from schools and scout groups.

The inauguration of the Ocean Revival nucleus at the Portimão Museum preceded the sinking of the fourth and last ship of the project, the hydrographic vessel “Almeida Carvalho”, an operation that took place on Saturday.
