Rosa Palma wants to "start at the basics" at Silves Chamber

«We will demonstrate what the municipality of Silves needs, give it the direction it needs. Show that we make a difference». These are the immediate intentions of Rosa Palma, from the CDU, who yesterday she was elected president of the Silves City Council.

Rosa Palma added, in an interview with Sul Informação, that your team will “start with the basics”, for example, “with garbage collection”, because “people cannot have garbage constantly at their door”. Afterwards, it will also “enhance public facilities and make use of them”.

It's just that, he stressed, "the City Council doesn't need to be a millionaire to do these things."

The new mayor, who was a CDU councilor for the previous four years, after being elected in the 2009 Municipalities, and who often served as a balance sheet, since the PSD, which previously held the presidency of the Chamber, did not have a majority, knows the problems of the Chamber well.

And he knows, for example, that «the Municipality of Silves has a serious problem, which is medium and long-term debt». Added to this is the fact that the municipality is responsible for paying the debt related to the controversial Viga d'Ouro case, in the amount of 8 million euros.

“Over these years, debt has increased and revenues have declined. There was bad management, lack of planning, electoralism and not looking for ways to win votes». But this is something that, guarantees Rosa Palma, will end now, with her presidency.

Expressing herself "very happy" with the result of the CDU, which led her to reoccupy a seat where the communists had already been, Rosa Palma insists on explaining that her campaign was always aimed at "getting people to vote".

“People are far from politics, with everything they see on television every day. We wanted to show that there are different politicians who want to work for the public good. The aim was even to ensure the least possible abstention,” he added.

And was he expecting this victory, something unexpected? «When we compete, it is always with the intention of winning. We, me and my team are prepared for this. I had the privilege of choosing elements with great connection and that complement each other. We are a real team».

The new mayor, who is a teacher in Silves, after the emotions of last night, was in classes all day today, «taking care of my students, whom I like a lot».

But the school will now have to stand aside. And the family will also suffer, as Rosa Palma's husband is João Carlos Correia, the re-elected president of the Parish Council of São Bartolomeu de Messines, also of the CDU.

For this very reason, as they are a true couple of mayors, Rosa Palma also insisted on stressing that their work would involve “treating all the Juntas equally and respecting the role of the Presidents of the Junta”.

So now all that's left is to roll up your hands and get to work. For this, the communist mayor will have to reach some consensus with the opposition councilors (PSD and PS), since the victory did not guarantee her an absolute majority in the municipal executive. A task that may not be easy, but for which it claims to be prepared.
