The Dr. João Dias Museum Center will be inaugurated tomorrow, Friday, in Alcoutim, Day of the Alcoutenejo Municipality. The municipality intends to honor "the name and deeds of the doctor and surgeon", whose estate was donated to the municipality by his family.
João Francisco Dias was born in Tenência, parish of Odeleite, municipality of Castro Marim, but came to settle in Alcoutim and it was here that he exercised his profession, after graduating in Coimbra, in 1927. «He died in 1955, with only 57 years old, but his memory continues to this day, as a great doctor and extraordinary surgeon. People from far away lands came to Alcoutim in search of this famous doctor», according to the Chamber of Alcoutim.
After his death, the people of Alcoutim honored him by having a bust erected at the entrance to the village. The creation of this museum, according to the municipality of Alcoutim, will contribute to enlivening the memory of this renowned doctor, narrating his story through his estate.
The center is installed in the former premises of the Hospital da Misericórdia and has, inside, Dr. João Dias's private library, office material, medical instruments and surgical material, personal objects, some photographs and newspapers from the period with references to the his meritorious figure. The work cost the Municipality of Alcoutim around 74 thousand euros.
