The company Águas do Algarve today denied any responsibility for the pollution of the waters of the Marina de Portimão beach, which yesterday led to the hoisting of the yellow flag, not recommending bathing. However, the green flag has already been hoisted.

"This situation has nothing to do with us," said Teresa Fernandes, company spokeswoman, in statements to Sul Informação, adding that “there was no leak in the system, nor was there any damage to the sewage pumping stations”.

Today, after the results of the analyzes carried out yesterday by the regional delegation of the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) were known, the green flag was once again raised in that bathing area, located within the estuary of the River Arade, thus removing any restrictions on bathing.

Yesterday, the Marina de Portimão beach had been «not recommended for bathing» by the APA, so the yellow flag was hoisted.

The analyzes carried out on Monday, the 2nd, had indicated that the water on that beach was “unsuitable for bathing due to the microbiological parameter Escherichia coli».

The situation did not affect the other beaches located within the Arade estuary, on the Lagoa side, namely the Grande and Pintadinho beaches, in Ferragudo, nor even the beaches located outside the estuary, such as Rocha.

Sources contacted yesterday by Sul Informação indicated that the situation could have been caused by some damage in the sewerage system of Águas do Algarve, with even the suspicion that the origin might have to do with the failure of a wastewater pipeline in V3, in the Vau area.

However, the company's spokeswoman denied such a possibility.
