The municipality of Vila Real de Santo António will expand basic sanitation networks in rural areas of the parish of Vila Nova de Cacela. The work amounts to two million euros, will benefit more than a thousand people and ensure the municipality's total coverage in terms of wastewater treatment.
The contracts will be developed under the Thematic Operational Program for the Enhancement of the Territory (POVT) and represent one of the largest investments ever made in this area in the parish of Cacela.
Work begins in the second half of August and will last approximately 180 days, and is expected to be completed in February 2014. They will benefit the localities of Caliço, Fonte Santa, Beco, Corujeira, Pedra Alva, Coutada, Cruz do Morto, Bornacha and Torre dos Frades, whose wastewater is then forwarded to the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) of VRSA.
For Luís Gomes, Mayor of VRSA, «the work allows all points in the parish of Vila Nova de Cacela to be now equipped with sanitation networks», thus improving «the quality of life of hundreds of families» .
At the same time, the intervention will allow for the improvement of dozens of kilometers of roads in the interior of the municipality, which will be repaved after the completion of the works.
The contracts are part of a set of interventions included in the Thematic Operational Program for the Enhancement of the Territory (POVT), under the National Strategic Reference Framework, which will take place in the Municipality in 2013 and 2014. The investments will allow for the creation of new systems , wants the expansion of current wastewater sanitation and water supply systems.
In addition to expanding service levels in terms of wastewater sanitation, the new networks will contribute to the protection of aquifers, improving the municipality's environmental quality.
