The fifth edition of the initiative will count on the presence of personalities such as José Pacheco Pereira, Castro Caldas, Conceição Gomes, Paulo Morais, Ana Benavente, Martins Guerreiro, Paulo Romeira, Alberto Melo, Andrea Caro, among others.

The classes will take place at the Municipal Library and at the Loulé Municipal Assembly and «the issues that will be debated this year are fundamental and urgent», considered the organization.

“The country is facing one of the most serious crises in its history. Public debt and external debt of the Portuguese economy exceeded 120 and 437 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) respectively. Unemployment currently affects nearly one million Portuguese. Youth unemployment is dangerously close to 39 percent. The Welfare State is facing one of the most severe attacks with a policy of generalized cuts in social benefits and wages, at the same time as the tax burden on families and companies is aggravated», framed In Loco.

Taking this reality into account, in this edition the Summer University will focus on two axes: «interpelling the crisis and its causes» and «exploring social and political responses that qualify people as citizens by calling them to recreate the politics as a space of transparency and collective construction and the invention of an economy – based on balance, intelligence and solidarity – capable of satisfying humans and respecting the land».

In Loco also considered that, given the situation in Portugal, «it is vital to create conditions so that a large number of people understand what is at stake and the results of the options taken».
