On August 28, the Rotary Club Estoi Palace International will offer a refrigerated van, worth 42,300 euros, to the Food Bank Against Hunger of the Algarve.

At the official ceremony, taking place at 18:00 in the warehouse of that institution in Faro, in the Santo António do Alto urbanization, Rua Raul de Matos, Lote. 72, those responsible for the Food Bank, Rotary members and the rest of the public will be present.

This initiative follows on from a “Matching Grant,” a Rotary Foundation program that enables Eligible Rotary Clubs to work with other Rotary clubs and districts and apply for funding for major projects.

This project, which began in April 2012, has the support of a Rotary Club of Texas, a Rotary District of Texas, a Club of Pennsylvania, an international group of Rotarians, and a Rotary District of Brazil, all of whom helped to fundraise. funds. A large percentage of the funds come directly from the Rotary Foundation Headquarters in Chicago.

In the application of the Rotary Club Estoi Palace International, it can be read that “the Food Bank of the Algarve Region serves 16.000 people a month, through 73 institutions in the Algarve in southern Portugal. There are still 13 institutions, involving around 4.000 people who are waiting to receive support”.

“The Food Bank is organized and managed entirely by volunteers, most of whom are Portuguese. All food donations must be delivered to the Food Bank warehouse in Faro and, as refrigerated vans are not available for transporting perishables donated by supermarkets, there was a problem”, add the Rotarians in Estoi.

Thus, “this project is precisely to finance a vehicle with these characteristics and specifications determined by the Food Bank. It is estimated that this vehicle can collect one ton of perishable food per day, that is, a total of 250 tons per year”, stresses the Algarve club.

Once the project has been approved and the fundraising completed, the van is now delivered.

Founded in 2008, the Rotary Club Estoi Palace International is a club with 18 members from eight nationalities and whose official language is English.

His first community support project in the Parish of Estoi was fundraising and the purchase and distribution of milk supplements in the aid packages that the Food Bank Against Hunger organizes monthly.

The main objective of the club is mainly to benefit children and, for this purpose, milk is the chosen food to support.

A total of 78 families (182 people) currently receive support, identified in the area of the Casa do Povo in Estoi.

The delivery of milk for the month of July was 524 liters, that is, two liters for each adult and six liters for each child.

Since the Milk Support Project started in July 2009, approximately 23.000 liters of milk have been distributed, at a current cost of around 10.000 euros.

For the continuation of this project, the Rotary Club Estoi Palace has an annual budget of 3.000 euros.

Rotary clubs have long accepted the call for peace at the local community level as they address the underlying reasons that contribute to conflict and violence, such as hunger, poverty, disease, and illiteracy.
