The entire area of the Alcantarilha river estuary will be flown over this afternoon, between 14:00 and 15:00, by a Kamov helicopter, following the reinforcement of measures to reduce the number of mosquitoes that have plagued the Armação de Pêra area, announced the Chamber of Silves.

According to the municipality, "this is a method that, through the combination of strong winds caused by the force of the device's blades and the consequent whirlwind of water, will contribute to the destruction of the population of adult mosquitoes and eggs existing in this area".

«Unlike many types of aircraft, Kamov helicopters have a system of two sets of three blades, mounted on the same axis, each rotating in opposite positions, which will allow to create an environment of strong winds and high water agitation when the device flies over at low altitude'.

The Chamber of Silves adds that "this and other measures, meanwhile carried out in the course of the last few weeks, will be reinforced with a new disinfestation using insecticide at the end of this week."

Since the 26th of July, and after the meeting held between the CMS, the APA – ARH Algarve and the ACES do Barlavento Health Authority, exceptional measures have been taken to solve this problem, including the increase in perimeter of the areas to be disinfested, the frequency of these disinfestations and the construction of a new dam in the Amendoeira Golf Resort area.
