The film «Filhos de um Mar Maior», which shows the struggle of the shellfish collectors of Vila do Bispo, will be presented tomorrow, August 2, at 18 pm, in the Auditorium of the Cultural Center of Vila do Bispo, with the presence of many of the pictured.

The documentary, which portrays the catching of barnacle, the most popular Portuguese seafood on the steep and rugged cliffs of the Costa Vicentina, has as protagonists José Seromenho Barata, “the Amola”, António Jorge Baptista, “the Cachola”, and the brothers António Ramos and José Ramos, both former shellfish gatherers. There are still other participants are the current professionals and members of the association.

The film, a project of the Vila do Bispo Association of Seafooders, is directed by former journalist Carlos Vaz, with interviews by Alexandra Trindade, and images by Miguel Veterano and Rodrigo Corteseano.

“The tides determine the rhythm of life of these men, the difficulties they face, the dangers they run and the violence of the barnacle capture. There are generations of shellfish gatherers, there are those who have left a good job and the comfort of the city to dedicate themselves to this life. Is it worth the risk?”, ask the documentary's authors.

Another question that is raised has to do with the management of this fishery, which is «the challenge that is imposed, at a time when the Association of Shellfish Collectors of Vila do Bispo is fighting for its certification».

The film has the collaboration of KORE and Mar de Histórias, being a project financed by the ProMar program.

The documentary screening is free.
