A Grouping of Health Centers (ACES) in the Algarve region has, for the first time, the capacity to assign a family doctor to all its users, announced the Regional Health Administration, in a press release.
This is ACES Sotavento, which integrates the municipalities of Tavira, Alcoutim, Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António, whose residents now have access to a family doctor for the first time.
According to the ARS, this is because ACES Sotavento «is currently able to assign a family doctor to all users registered in the various units that make up the municipalities in its coverage area».
With thirty-six general and family medicine doctors, ACES Sotavento, in conjunction with the Regional Health Administration of the Algarve, has implemented «a strategy for the reorganization of services and rationalization of existing human resources, namely, doctors and nurses, with a view to to ensure the provision of efficient and quality healthcare to all those who need it and, at the same time, to guarantee a family doctor to the approximately 60 users currently enrolled in ACES Sotavento», adds the press release.
The chairman of the Board of Directors of ARS Algarve, Martins dos Santos, highlights «the commitment of the executive management of ACES Sotavento, allied to the professionalism and dedication of all professionals of this ACES who have contributed in a very positive way to improving accessibility for all the users of its catchment area to primary health care».
ARS Algarve, in articulation with the three ACES in the Region (Barlavento, Central and Sotavento), states that it has been «taking the necessary measures to address the chronic shortage of family doctors in the Algarve region, either through the opening of public tenders or through the reorganization of services, in order to ensure that all users have access to the provision of health care whenever they need it».
