Grilled sardines, accompanied by a good popular festival, handicrafts and a ride in a bumper car. For dessert, regional sweets or a laugh with a play. And to digest, a medronho or a calm visit to the museum. These are some of the proposals for the August animation in Portimão.

In other words, between August 1st and 11th, Portimão celebrates its main gastronomic icon and throughout the city the atmosphere is festive, combined with the aroma of traditional sardines that promises to whet everyone's appetite.

In addition to the delicious grilled sardines, accompanied by baked potatoes and algarvian salad, to be eaten in the city's restaurants, along the Portimão riverside area, there are several poles of attraction for children and adults during these 11 nights, from children's entertainment to musical entertainment , complemented with the cultural proposals of Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes, TEMPO – Municipal Theater of Portimão and the Museum of Portimão.

Freshly caught and placed on the coals previously prepared by the specialists of the most traditional restaurants in Portimão, the grilled sardine will always be the queen of the party, accompanied by the best homemade bread and the typical algarvian salad.

Old auction with traditional arts & flavors

Inside the old auction, there will be an exhibition of regional arts and flavors with free entry, in which it is possible to purchase handicrafts, jewelry, medronho brandy, sweets and many other products, while in a tent next door there is another Book Fair in Portimão, which is open from 19pm to midnight and offers the latest news and older editions.

 

TEMPO – Municipal Theater of Portimão

A sharp comedy first performed in 1977 by Raul Solnado, “Isto é que me doi” gained the status of a classic in the Portuguese theatrical world.

This show can be seen until the end of August at TEMPO – Teatro Municipal de Portimão, staged by Francisco Nicholson and performed by José Raposo, Joel Branco, Joaquim Nicolau, Sara Barradas, Fátima Severino, Miguel Raposo and Ricardo Raposo, with sessions on Thursdays , Fridays and Saturdays, from 22 pm.

At the Café Concerto do TEMPO, there is an exhibition of photography and sound installation by Nuno Borges and Rui Gonçalves, whose theme is the body and its connection with the earth, which can be seen on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 14 pm to 00 pm and from Thursday to Saturday between 19 pm and 00 pm.

 

Manuel Teixeira Gomes House

At Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes, a cultural space totally dedicated to the life and work of this writer and statesman, the exhibition “Art as Liberation of the Spirit” brings together the works of various local artists, from painting to dance, not forgetting music, sculpture, painting and photography, which can be seen from Monday to Friday, from 10:00 am to 23:00 pm and on Saturdays and Sundays between 17:00 pm and 23:00 pm.

Starting at 19 pm, a summer mini-fair animates the youngest's nights, with carousels, car tracks, inflatables and many other diversions that delight the little ones, providing good times with the family.

 

Portimão Museum

At the Museu de Portimão, the exhibition “Portimão – Território e Identidade” pays homage to the city that for many decades lived off the fishing and canning industry, keeping the collective memory alive.

The temporary exhibitions “Summer Holidays – Cans of 1001 colors” (from August 1st) and “Arte com Lata” (from August 3rd) can also be seen, with the Portimão Museum opening its doors at night , on Tuesdays from 19:30 pm to 23:00 pm and from Wednesday to Sunday, between 15:00 pm and 23:00 pm.
