The opposition was unanimous in its reaction to the announcement of the non-resignation of Passos Coelho, demanding the call for early elections by the President of the Republic.

Jerónimo de Sousa (general secretary of the PCP):

the President of the Republic “assumes serious responsibilities if he maintains his position of assistance” of the “undignified spectacle that takes place in this dead-end government that is in fact defeated”.

"We believe that there is no other worthy democratic solution other than the dissolution of the Assembly of the Republic and, consequently, the scheduling of early elections," he added.

António José Seguro (General Secretary of the PS):

"Government collapsed, fell into the public square." "The prime minister has lost the least amount of political authority to govern"

“What exists is no longer a government. Enough of pretending!»

The country has reached a politically "intolerable" situation, and it is necessary to "give back the word to the Portuguese" through legislative elections.

"The Prime Minister may intend to perpetuate his position", but "does not realize that he has lost the confidence of his coalition leader" and "has lost the confidence of the Portuguese".

João Semedo (Left Bloc coordinator»:

"This coalition has disappeared".

“PSD and CDS ruled the country for two years and left it in a sorry state. Now they threw him into a political swamp».

"The country is waiting for the PSD to present a motion of confidence in Parliament", challenged Semedo, who considered that "the Government is mortally wounded".

"The President of the Republic must call for elections".
