Occupancy averages in hotel units belonging to the Algarve's Hotels and Tourism Enterprises association (AHETA) rose again in June 2012, compared to the same month last year. Highlight for the large increase of Irish who were in the region, compared to last year.

According to provisional data on performance last month, released by the business association, "the overall average occupancy/room was 73,1 percent, 4,7 percentage points above the figure recorded in 2012".

An increase that was driven by a stronger presence of Irish people (up 1,8 pp, up 41,6 percent compared to 2012», Dutch (more 0,6 pp, 12,5 percent) and British (+ 0,4 pp, 2,1 percent).

On the other hand, there were fewer Spaniards (down 0,6 pp, year-on-year decrease of 31,8 percent) and Germans (-0,6 pp, -11,8 percent).

By zones, the one with the highest occupancy was Vilamoura / Quarteira / Quinta do Lago, which recorded the highest average occupancy rate (80,2 percent), but which saw the number of tourists rise the most, and one year for the other, it was the tourist areas of Carvoeiro / Armação de Pêra (7,7 percent) and Albufeira (6 percent). Paria da Rocha was the one with the lowest occupancy, with 64,4 percent of the supply to be filled.

By typology, 3-star hotels and aparthotels rose in terms of occupancy rates compared to 2012, as well as 5-star and 4-star tourist villages and apartments (13,1 and 7,4 percent, respectively).

The highest occupancy averages were found in 4- and 5-star hotels, villages and tourist apartments (83 percent), while their 3-star counterparts were the least sought after by visitors to the region (60,4 percent).
