The PSD deputy elected by the Algarve Cristóvão Norte considered that the dredging in the Ria Formosa, as well as "the intervention in the WWTP and in the untreated sewage that they pollute" are measures that "are necessary", in the presentation of the final report on a relative petition to this Algarve lagoon area.

The petitioners asked the Government to undertake the studies, scheduling and promotion of the work necessary to mitigate the various types of problems that plague the Ria Formosa.

Following this petition, Cristóvão Norte "will shortly present a set of proposals to the Government to ensure that the Ria Formosa is better protected and that this lagoon area can emerge as one of the greatest assets of the Algarve", according to a press release sent by the parliamentarian. to newsrooms.

The Algarvian deputy, in his speech in the Assembly of the Republic, stressed that “the Ria Formosa is under many tensions, in fact, as evidenced by several studies on this object and that, in this context, it is difficult to understand that risks to its vitality increase due to the effect of sources of pollution that can be controlled and that constitute blatant violations of this environment».

"It is high time that public entities: Government, municipalities and others, as well as citizens, understand that environmental protection is associated with economic enhancement as a fundamental axis for the economic and social cohesion of the municipalities affected by the Ria Formosa", considered Christopher North.

For this to happen, measures must be taken to “safeguard the balance of the ecosystem and ensure that its potential is used in harmony with the preservation of biodiversity, coastal protection and the economic activities that take place there”.

"This is not an easy balance, but it requires greater effort from public entities, which, historically, have not been able to promote a climate of trust and credibility in the management of this lagoon space", he considered.
