The Municipal Firefighters of Olhão (BMO) joined the General Strike today, but guarantee urgent and emergency situations.

Henrique Maria, union leader of the BMO, revealed to the Sul Informação that the situations of possible “fires, accidents, imprisonment” will have an adequate response, affecting the strike only normal daily situations, such as transporting the sick or opening doors.

According to the union leader, of the seven people who would be part of the service picket from 8 am to 20 pm, only one is on duty, while the rest are on strike.

As for the reasons for joining the General Strike, Henrique Maria stressed that they have to do with "the general situation of the country", but also with the "lack of requalification of our careers". «The career has not been reviewed for 12 years. In the case of Olhão, around 2007, 2008, there was a window of opportunity to review, but the Chamber of Olhão did not take advantage of it».

And the result, he said, is that 95% of the BMOs, who are around four dozen, «are third-grade firefighters, which is the basis of their career. Compared to the army, we can say that we have a general and many soldiers. There are no sergeants, captains. It's all squares».

Henrique Maria also added that, on this day of General Strike, "there are even more firefighters here in the barracks than usual".
