Portuguese poet Nuno Júdice, born in Mexilhoeira Grande (Portimão) in 1949, won the XXII Queen Sofia Prize for Iberoamerican Poetry, reports the Spanish newspaper El País.

This is the second time that a Portuguese poet has been awarded this important prize, after having been awarded in 2003 to Sophia de Mello Breyner.

The award, which has existed since 1992 and is endowed with a prize of 42100 euros, is awarded to all the poetic work of a living author whose literary value constitutes a relevant contribution to the cultural heritage of the Ibero-American world.

Poet, novelist, playwright, essayist and professor at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Nuno Júdice has published books such as “A Noção de Poema” (1972) and “A Fonte da Vida”(1997). Recently, Júdice released the novel «Implosion».

In 1994, his book «Meditação sobre Ruínas» was distinguished by the Portuguese Writers Association. In 1990, he received the D. Dinis prize from the Casa de Mateus.

The newspaper El País also recalls that nearly three decades of his poetry were collected in the book “Antologia”, translated into Spanish in 2003.

In recent years, the Queen Sofia Prize for Poetry has been awarded to Nicaraguan Ernesto Cardenal (2012), Cuban Fina García Marruz (2011), and Spanish Francisco Brines (2010).

In 1994, the prize had been awarded to another Portuguese-speaking poet, the Brazilian João Cabral de Melo Neto.

Last March, Nuno Júdice presented, at the Teatro Municipal de Portimão, his new book “A Implosão”, the name of this writer and poet being given to the space in the Small Auditorium.

In that novel, edited by Dom Quixote, he draws a critical and painful portrait of the political and social situation currently being experienced in Portugal and Europe.

Born in 1949 in Mexilhoeira Grande, Júdice became famous as a poet and fiction writer and has works translated in Spain, Italy, Venezuela, England and France.
