The financing model for Regional Tourism Entities was debated on Tuesday during a meeting that brought together the Secretary of State for Tourism Adolfo Mesquita Nunes, and the president of Algarve Tourism Desidério Silva.

For the Algarvian leader, those public entities should have financial autonomy to promote the regions covered by them in the future.

“At a time when the tourism sector is undergoing a profound reorganization, it seems crucial to us to talk about our current financing model. What we want is for the regions to have the financial capacity to ensure their role in promoting tourism», underlined Desidério Silva after the meeting behind closed doors with the Secretary of State.

The work agenda also included topics that have been on the agenda for the Algarve region, such as the creation of incentives to streamline the sector that avoid the cancellation of tourist operations during the winter or the bet on new direct air routes to (and to) ) Faro.

For Desidério Silva, the Algarve has to alleviate the seasonality of tourist demand «and this is achieved with a global strategy that privileges other supply segments, greater regional autonomy, more air connections to the destination and a reduction in the VAT rate on restaurants and golf courses, for example», said the president, for whom this is the right time to change.

"We must take advantage of the pace of change driven by the new law on tourism regions," approved in the specialty last Friday, he concluded.
