Your boat may be delayed, the trip may be canceled at the last minute and people with disabilities or reduced mobility may suffer discriminatory treatment and without specific assistance in port terminals and on board ships, without this translating into liability and sanctions for those responsible for the vessels.

From 1 January 2013 this type of situation will change thanks to the entry into force of a new European Union regulation that stipulates new rules designed to better protect passengers traveling by sea and river.

Maritime transport passengers will be entitled to compensation for damages in the event of an accident, the information accessible before and during the journey; adequate assistance, including meals and accommodation, a guarantee of reimbursement or re-routing in the event of trip cancellation or departure delay of more than 90 minutes.

The new rules also stipulate compensation in the event of death, bodily injury and loss or damage to luggage, vehicles and mobility equipment; between others.

Information on passenger rights can be downloaded from smart phones via a free application, compatible with all platforms (http://ec.europa.eu/transport/passenger-rights/pt/mobile.html)
