Over the weekend, the Algarve Food Bank Against Hunger (BACF) collected around 173 tonnes of foodstuffs, which will be distributed to institutions throughout the Algarve region.

These numbers are “slightly higher” than those of the campaign at the same time last year, but they become even more significant at a time of deep crisis, which seems to have not reached the spirit of solidarity.

These results are not yet definitive, as they refer only to the bag campaign, which takes place in commercial establishments. Until next Sunday, it is still possible to join by purchasing BACF vouchers at participating supermarkets or contributing online at the Banco Alimentar website.

In the case of vouchers, simply present, choose one of those available in commercial establishments and present it in the cashier. These vouchers only have value when their barcode is entered into the supermarket system where it is purchased, so it is not worth delivering the small papers to the food bank.

The online campaign allows anyone with an Internet connection to contribute, wherever they are. To do this, just go to campaign website, choose what you want to donate and you can even designate which region of the country you want to support.

At national level, the Food Banks Against Hunger collected in Portugal, last weekend, 2.914 tonnes of foodstuffs in the campaign carried out in 1.668 commercial areas. More than 38.500 volunteers participated.

The campaign took place on Saturday and Sunday, in supermarkets across the country, with the aim of collecting essential foods for people in need, including flour, milk, rice, pasta, oil, olive oil and various types of canned goods.

According to the Food Bank, the 2.914 tons of food collected will be distributed starting next week to 2.373 social solidarity institutions, for delivery to around 373 thousand needy people.

The Food Banks Against Hunger campaign carried out in November last year collected around 2.950 tons of food.
