Crime levels have been declining over the last decade in most European Union countries. There are, however, considerable differences between the various types of crime.

According to a report by the European Commission, between 2006 and 2009, police recorded an increase in crimes in some Member States, particularly burglaries and drug trafficking. At the same time, the number of car thefts, violent crimes and robberies has decreased substantially.

To further lower crime levels in the EU, the European Commission has proposed a set of crime prevention initiatives that are already in place within the framework of the European Crime Prevention Network (ECRP).
Measures such as preventing robberies in the streets, combating cyber-bullying or preventing drug addiction at an early stage are some of the proposals that RECP has been supporting and implementing since 2001.

The network also provides assistance to law enforcement agencies, social workers and youth professionals, health professionals, teachers and academics, as well as policy makers at EU and national level.
