The Municipality of Tavira once again responded to Amnesty International's appeal and joined the campaign “Cities for life – Cities against the death penalty”, which will take place on Friday 30 November.

On this World Day against the Death Penalty, the monument in Praça da República will be illuminated as a tribute to all those whose life was taken from them and as a protest against this law.

“The right to life is inalienable: no authority can decide to take the life of a human being. The death penalty is a symptom of a culture of violence rather than a solution to it. It has not proven to have a deterrent effect and denies the possibility of rehabilitation and reconciliation. Judicial errors can happen, however, the death penalty is irreversible and can be applied to an innocent person. Furthermore, international law favors universal abolition and encourages all States to abolish the death penalty”.

The campaign is promoted by Amnesty International.
