Review of the biography written by Cristina Carvalho and recently published by Editorial Estampa, included in her collection “Memória das Letras”.

Rómulo de Carvalho is an unavoidable personality of XNUMXth century Portuguese culture. Professor of Physical Chemistry (at Liceu Camões, in Lisbon, Liceu Dom João III – today José Falcão – in Coimbra, and Liceu Pedro Nunes, in Lisbon), pedagogue, researcher, historian, disseminator of scientific knowledge and poet.

As a teacher, he marked generations of students and captivated many of them to the sciences. As a researcher and historian, he left us works that are still unsurpassed and of unavoidable reference, such as the “History of the Physics Office of the University of Coimbra” and “History of Teaching in Portugal from the Foundation of Nationality to the End of the Salazar Regime- Caetano”.

As a science promoter “for all”, he marks the history of science in Portugal: there is clearly “a before and an after” Rómulo de Carvalho. As a poet, voice of an enlightened inner conscience that reveals himself to the world at the age of fifty under the pseudonym of António Gedeão, he stands alongside the best poets of his generation. Certainly the greatest Portuguese poet of science.

About this “one duality” that is “Rómulo de Carvalho / António Gedeão”, at least while António Gedeão existed, writes Cristina Carvalho, daughter of the scientist/poet, in a biography with that same title and which she accepted after an invitation of the Editorial Print.

The author adds a “Perfect Prince” to the title, anticipating her infinite filial admiration, her identification with the father figure.

He shares with us memories and stories that allow us to better understand the personality of the man who, being a born teacher and communicator of excellence, paradoxically avoided proximity, facing social and human problems in cosmic silence.

This biography, published by Editorial Estampa, included in its collection “Memória das Letras”, also contains a very useful complete bibliographical list of the works of Rómulo de Carvalho / António Gedeão, as well as a chronological list of the numerous tributes paid to him throughout the 1996, on the occasion or in the context of the celebration of its 90th anniversary.
