The temporary exhibition “Memories of the Sacred”, which is a tribute to the history of the Igreja Matriz in Portimão, opens on Sunday, the 25th, at 12:30 pm, in the main hall of the Parish Council of Portimão, in partnership with the Parish Church of Portimão.

The exhibition presents the canvases and images recovered from that church, constituting a valuable sample of the artistic collection dedicated to Catholic worship with greater historical-artistic interest, which gathered over the centuries in Portimão.

According to Father Mário Sousa, “our parish has made a great effort to restore heritage that was very degraded, especially canvases and sculptures. Among them, a painting from the XNUMXth century, from the old altarpiece in the chancel, or one from the XNUMXth century, from the old chapel of Compromisso Marítimo, or even the Image of Nª Srª Mãe das Almas, patron of the fishermen of Portimão».

Likewise, adds the parish priest of the Igreja Matriz, “there are pieces that have been offered lately and that are unknown to the community, such as a XNUMXth century chair with inlaid mother-of-pearl, or a Last Supper in Italian porcelain. Thus, the community can know what belongs to it and follow the conservation work that the parish is carrying out».

According to the Parish Council of Portimão, this exhibition “also symbolizes the long-standing intention of setting up a museum center dedicated to the sacred art of Portimão, where the importance of the sacred heritage of this city is revealed and, simultaneously, where there is an appeal for its recovery and safeguard». This Museum will function precisely in the space where the exhibition is now opening, when the Board has another headquarters.

The exhibition of the canvases and images of the Igreja Matriz in Portimão can be seen in the main hall of the Parish Council until December 23rd.
