The PSD/Faro went public to welcome the approval of the candidacy of Faro to the Local Economy Support Plan (PAEL), in the Municipal Assembly of Faro last week, in a position where there was no lack of criticism of the PS's previous administration. The proposal was approved with votes in favor of the PSD/CDS/MPT coalition in power and the PS, but the reasons given by the parties for their sense of voting are quite different.

The Social Democrats consider, in a statement, that this is a good opportunity to pay off debts that, "unfortunately, have accumulated over the last decade", but the PS, which also sent its explanation of vote to newsrooms, says it has “serious reservations on some technical and sustainability issues of the financial model itself”.

And if the PSD praises "the speed and agility with which the Executive put this candidacy in motion", the PS questioned "the very limited time available for analyzing the documents" which, the socialists claim, "did not favor or allow the slightest clarification".

PAEL will allow the Chamber of Faro pay 24 million euros in short-term debt overdue for more than 90 days, which corresponds to "more than 14 thousand invoices". Half of this amount is intended for companies in the municipality, guaranteed the president of the Chamber of Faro Macário Correia, at AM last Thursday.

Noting "the responsible posture assumed by the socialist bench", the social democrats consider that "the PS thus gives its hand to the paddle and recognizes the state of penury in which the autarchy has left".

The positive vote of the PS is, for the PSD, an acknowledgment that «after all, the Municipality not only lacked a financial rebalancing plan (something that was constantly and vehemently denied by those responsible), but also needed an urgent capital injection to face the constraints caused by more than a decade of bad accounts».

The socialists have a different view, who guaranteed right after the vote, in their statement, that they voted in favor of the PAEL candidacy "aware that this is the only possibility that the current government grants municipalities to pay overdue debts to their suppliers" .

The PS also said that it had taken into account «the failure of the financial strategy of the current right-wing majority in the City Council of Faro, based on an electoral proposal for Financial Rebalancing, which after having been approved by the Municipal Assembly of Faro it was never put into practice, due to the electoral management that was being carried out by the President of the Executive, who consciously delayed its implementation, to the point where it was no longer possible due to the worsening of the financial crisis».
