Chestnut and chestnut were once important elements of the economy of the Serra de Monchique and today continue to mark traditions. For this reason, on November 1st, as usual, there will be the Chestnut Festival in Marmelete and the Magusto Popular in Alferce.

The XIX Edition of the Chestnut Festival takes place at the Casa do Povo of Marmelete, from 15 pm on the All Saints Day holiday, when the Parish Day is also celebrated, recalling the traditional magustos of chestnuts, which by this time were flowing.

This is an organization of the Parish Council of Marmelete, which counts on the collaboration of Associations, Clubs, Day Centre, Medronho Producers and EB1/JI of Marmelete.

Visitors can enjoy, free of charge, chestnuts roasted in the traditional way, using the carqueja, a small shrub that thrives throughout the municipality of Monchique.

There will be plenty of flavors from the mountains, such as sweets, skewered pork, medronho, honeydew or donuts, and lots of musical entertainment provided by the Latinas and their dancers.

At 17:30 pm, the Merit Diplomas will be delivered to the best students in the Parish, an initiative that aims to reward students who, throughout the 2011/2012 academic year, have excellently developed the skills of their curriculum and a taste for study and by learning.

From 19 pm onwards, the musical entertainment will continue (indoors) with the ballet dancer, in charge of the accordionist Fernando Pereira.

In Alferce, the local Parish Council also promotes on November 1st the popular Magusto, an event that has the best ingredients that the Serra de Monchique has to offer.

In this year's edition, visitors will be able to find the traditional roasted chestnuts and standing water, as well as a display of local products (honey, medronho brandy, traditional sausages, agricultural products and handicrafts).

The event starts at 11 am, with a display of local products.

At 14 pm, the opening of the ethnographic exhibition of embroidery and DIY is scheduled at the Casa do Povo in Alferce.

The Magustos and the animation begin at 15 pm with Telma Santos, Cláudio Rosado and the performance of the Grupo Coral da Confraria do Medronho Os Monchiqueiros.

The Alferce Parish Council intends to recall the traditional magustos that were occurring in this area of the Serra de Monchique at this time.
