Some of the workers who worked at the Retail Park in Portimão have already started to receive dismissal letters, despite the promises made by the companies that own the stores destroyed by fire a week ago.

At the moment, there will be about ten workers in this situation, but the regional leader of the Trade, Offices and Services Workers Union of Portugal (CESP) Maria José Madeira fears that it could be extended to all term contracted workers.

In addition to "four to six" cleaning employees, who worked for a company that provided services to the mainland, they have also received termination letters "four workers from Aki", she revealed to Sul Informação the unionist.

In the case of cleaning workers, they were “transferred to the mainland of Portimão”, but the company Servilimpa, for which they work, has in the meantime sent dismissal letters to these workers. At Aki, the letters were sent to employees «on contracts of three and six months», revealed Maria José Madeira.

"As far as workers with fixed term contracts are concerned, we fear that the same will happen to everyone," he lamented. “We still spoke with the Retail Park administration today and they don't even have data to give. This is a situation that will take some time to be resolved», he said.

Since the process of expert examination and eventual activation of insurance is expected to take a long time, Maria José Madeira says she does not know if the seven affected areas “will want to cover the extra expenses, with the displacement” of workers to other units of the groups in the Algarve.

A situation against which he promises to fight, not least because, he recalled, "these are large economic groups that manage to absorb these workers or create jobs for them, even if they are temporary," he said.

In the early morning hours of September 23, a fire completely destroyed the Continente stores, Rádio Popular, Decathlon, Staples, De Borla, Aki and Moviflor, in Portimão's Retail Park. The fury of the flames only spared the Feu Vert workshop, the catering area and the gas station there, all of them in buildings apart from the main complex, where the seven burnt shops were located.
