Four Municipalities of the Barlavento Algarvio publicly repudiated the cuts announced in the news service of the Lusa Agency in the Algarve. The Chambers of Aljezur, Lagos and Vila do Bispo, through the association of municipalities «Terras do Infante» and the Chamber of Portimão, in a parallel initiative, called on the Government to «not destroy the public news service provided by that agency».

The municipalities that make up “Terras do Infante”, in a joint statement, “solidarize themselves with the agency's workers fighting for a decent service for the benefit of the Algarve and the Algarve (and the country!)”. They also approved a motion to repudiate this measure.

In Portimão, a motion against the reduction of Lusa's service was also approved, but in a Chamber Meeting. «The motion, signed by the mayor Manuel da Luz, had the abstention of the PSD councilors and considers that the most recent government guidelines for the public media, based in the region, have provoked the progressive destruction of the connection channels of the Algarve's local communities to the national media space», revealed the Portimão Chamber.

The municipality of Portimo also criticizes "the significant reduction in the treatment of regional information materials, due to the limitations imposed on regional delegations of the public television and radio service".

"Considering that the announced cuts may not only lead to dismissals and suppression of this public service in its local component, but will also aim to camouflage the impact and negative consequences that restrictive policies are having throughout the country, the motion states that the Algarve region one cannot remain silent in the face of this attempt at silencing», concludes the Portimão municipality.
