The Municipal Library of Lagos Dr. Júlio Dantas celebrates, this year, its 21st anniversary. During the month of November, when this municipal facility opened its doors to the public for the first time, various activities will take place for all tastes and audiences.

The Municipal Library has prepared a special and diversified program to mark your birthday, which includes cinema, short story sessions, meetings and gatherings, among other surprises.

The month of November will also mark the beginning of a new project linked to reading. The start of the project “The Library Is…” is scheduled for the beginning of November and will run until the end of the year. In this first phase, it will be aimed at users of the Lagos Health Center and Santa Casa da Misericórdia – Lar Rainha D. Leonor.

This initiative arises from the need to continue to broaden its audience and to make books and reading available to a wider and more differentiated audience than those who usually attend this cultural facility.

It is expected that, with this initiative, the number of loans will increase, continuing to promote reading habits, this time without the public needing to purposely travel to the library for this purpose.

For this purpose, the library will make available chests of books for adults and children/youths in the aforementioned places. The idea is that anyone who frequents these spaces can choose the book they want to read, take it with them and, after reading it, return it to the trunk from which it was taken or, if you prefer, deliver it to the Municipal Library.

The library has, over the years, been striving to disseminate and implement the book among its population, following the stipulated in the UNESCO Manifesto on Public Libraries, namely with the opening of Reading Poles in the parishes of the municipality.

For this month of celebration, several storytelling sessions are also planned, especially for children from 4 years old and their families. "Blind of the Witches" is a show by storytellers based on traditional Portuguese tales and with a strong musical component. Seven little stories of being afraid and not being afraid anymore! Taking place on Saturdays in November, at the Municipal Library of Lagos and at the Reading Poles.

Also at the beginning of the month, on the 03rd, a debate on International Day for Disaster Reduction – marked in October). This initiative, with free entry, aims to draw attention to the problem of natural disasters, with a particular focus on an updated and concerted reflection on their prevention in the municipality of Lagos.

The debate will feature distinguished guest speakers, namely Miguel Maia (Deputy Commissioner of PSP), Alberto Batista and Emanuel Glória (President and local coordinator of the Portuguese Red Cross of Lagos, respectively) and Paulo Jorge (Municipal Operational Commander and Commander of Voluntary Firefighters of lakes). The moderator of this debate will be Cândido Igrejas, director of the Correio de Lagos newspaper.
