Investigators show again what they know in Olhão

Science will leave the laboratories of the University of Algarve and the research centers associated with it to return […]

Science will leave the laboratories of the University of Algarve and the research centers associated with it to return to be in direct contact with those heading to the Ria Shopping, in Olhão, on 28 September. The Algarve is once again joining the international initiative European Researchers' Night, but the program starts in the morning, at 10 am, with science for all tastes and ages, which lasts until 22 pm.

This year, the theme of the initiative, which is taking place simultaneously in several European cities, is Sport, which, in addition to the virtuosity of its practitioners, also requires a lot of science.

The idea is to "celebrate the 100th anniversary of Portugal's participation in the Olympic Games, among other international sporting events that took place this year," revealed CRIA – the University of Algarve's Entrepreneurship Division, which coordinates the event at a regional level.

It is precisely in the sporting aspect that the big news for this year's edition comes up. On the upper floor of the shopping center in Olhão, the same as the restaurants, various sports demonstrations will be held, as well as a gathering on “Science and Sport”.

In addition to the university, the Algarve's Live Science Centers (CCV) are part of the list of this day dedicated to researchers (Faro), from Lagos and Tavira. In the first two cases, there will be a special program for those who go to each of these locations, while in the case of the CCV in Tavira it will be the team and some material to move to neighboring Olhão, to make known what is done. in this science outreach center.

In Olhão, the varied program it gives the opportunity to see science happening up close and, above all, to get a better understanding of what a researcher does. The best way to do this is to get hands-on, the name of initiatives where the general public can carry out a scientific experiment, or, with a short private conversation with a researcher, in the so-called "speed datings", quick meetings in a translation to the letter.

«In the “Hands on” activities we will be able to count on several scientific and interactive exhibitors from important representatives of science, such as CCMAR – Center for Marine Science, CBME – Center for Molecular and Structural Biomedicine, Centro Ciência Viva de Tavira, CECTA – Center for Studies in Agricultural Sciences and Technologies, Cognitive Neurosciences Group, among others», revealed the organization.

«The aim is to bring the public closer to the world of research, showing how science and the role of the scientist contributes to simplifying our daily tasks, showing how science relates to sport and how it is important to increase the quality of the individual's life», illustrated the CRIA.

And if the Researchers' Night 2012 already brought together the areas of Science and Sport, it did not leave out Culture, as had already happened a year ago. This time, the audience will be presented with the play “Nos Child”, by the Theater Group of the University of Algarve Sin-Cera. Another highlight was the screening of the documentary «Kimeraa do Atlântico: Encounter between Science and Tradition».

CCV de Lagos bets on getting visitors moving

The 2012 European Researchers' Night serves as a pretext for the Lagos Living Science Center convince those who visit to move more. The 28th of September will be dedicated to Sports and, so that there are no excuses, anyone will be able to assess their physical condition free of charge, in the initiative «Legs for what I want».

The assessment will be carried out by technicians from the municipal company «Lagos em Forma», who, in addition to evaluating various parameters of physical condition, will also give some nutrition advice to the participants, in an action that takes place between 20 and 21 hours.

At 20:30 pm, Fátima Baptista and Vera Lúcia Zymbal, researchers at the Faculty of Human Motricity of the Technical University of Lisbon, will explain how sport can contribute to healthy bones, in the «Sport and Bone Health» initiative. At 21 pm, the CCV of Lagos has everyone looking at the sky, in an Astronomical Observation session.

Living Science Center of Faro promotes debate on the researcher's role and promotes astronomy

O Algarve Living Science Center, situated in Faro, the first to open in the region, also promotes activities at its facilities, located next to the Doca. Thus, on the 28th of September, between 15 pm and 00 pm, the workshop «The Impact of the Researcher on Society» will take place.

At the same place, from 21 pm until midnight, the lecture “From Biologist to Astronomer” will take place, followed by night astronomical observation.

In addition, as already mentioned, the CCV Algarve also promotes, at the Ria Shopping de Olhão, “Mao na Massa Activities”.
