Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2009, is one of the experts who will participate, until tomorrow, the 4th, in the international workshop that is taking place at the Hotel Vila Galé-Albacora, in Tavira.

The International Workshop has the participation of more than a hundred researchers from 23 countries and is intended to promote a debate of ideas on advances in RNA Biology.

The event is organized by the Center for Marine Sciences (CCMAR), in conjunction with the Institute of Chemical and Biological Technology (ITQB).

The Workshop has the presence of important names in this area of research, such as Professor Doctor Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2009, for his studies on the structure and function of the ribosome.

The biology of RNA has implications for the study of many diseases, as well as for understanding the regulation of gene expression and evolution. Recently, ribozymes, miRNA, siRNAs, and many other types of functional non-coding RNA have been discovered and there are studies indicating that RNA regulates the expression of genetic information, playing an important role in controlling metabolism.

This Workshop is also a satellite meeting of the FEBS/ IUBMB Congress under the theme “From Single Molecules to Systems Biology”, which will take place in Seville, between the 4th and 9th of the same month.
