Algarve dominates National Child Sailing Optimist 2012

The top places on the podium of the VIII Portuguese Children's Sailing Championship in the Optimist class, held in Vila Real de Santo António, were all occupied by Algarve sailors.

In the classification by teams, the Associação Naval do Guadiana, a club from Vila Real de Santo António, won, beating the Clube de Vela de Viana do Castelo and the Clube de Vela do Barreiro.

In the individual rankings, the domain was also Algarve. In the male sector, the sailor Manuel Fortunato, from Clube de Vela de Lagos, was crowned Champion of Portugal, sending Diogo Malheiro, from Associação Naval do Guadiana, and Alex Baptista, from Clube Náutico da Boca da Barra, for the 2nd and 3rd places, respectively.

In the women's competition, the result was uncertain until the last race, with the victory smiling to Beatriz Gago, from Clube Naval de Portimão, who finished 13th overall.

Catarina Coelho, from Clube de Vela de Viana do Castelo, and Catarina Abrantes, from Associação Naval do Guadiana, closed the podium.

It was a very competitive championship, with the presence of 80 young sailors representing clubs from all over the continent and islands, organized by the Portuguese Sailing Federation and the Guadiana Naval Association.

«These results confirm the excellence of the Algarve's training for young sailors, and for the first time have an Algarve sailor in the highest place on the podium», stresses Pedro Estorninho Viana, director of the Clube Naval de Portimão.
