Pedro Castelo Xavier and Helder Renato Rodrigues will dispute this Thursday, August 9th, the elections for the presidency of the Political Commission of the Municipality of the PSD of Portimão.

Pedro Xavier, 38 years old, businessman, is the current president of this structure of social democrats from Portimão and is re-candidate, heading the List A.

Pedro Xavier was recently involved in the case of the appointments made by the new president of the Centro Hospitalar do Barlavento Algarvio. But, due to the wave of comments and negative reactions that was generated against his appointment to the CHBA, he ended up resigning from that position and the appointment that was interpreted by a large part of public opinion as merely political.

Helder Renato Rodrigues, 38 years old, who has lived in Portimão since 2006, is the current chief of staff of the president of the Chamber of Monchique, social democrat Rui André.

Its List B, with the motto "Change to Win", has as its first subscribers Filipe Abreu (founder of the PSD and former deputy) and Carlos Martins (former secretary of state and former deputy), as well as other important figures of the PSD of Portimão.

As candidates for vice-presidents on List B are Júlio Ferreira (former president of JSD Portimão in the 90s) and Ricardo Samuel Oliveira (university professor and former member of the Municipal Assembly of Portimão), and secretary general Nuno Campos Inácio, official of justice, investigator and author.

The proposals

Pedro Castelo Xavier – In his letter to the militants, the current leader of the PSD/Portimão Council and re-candidate through List A, makes a very positive assessment of the two years he was at the head of the party locally: «the PSD/Portimão passed from the fifth section to the third section in number of militants in the District of Faro. The PSD/Portimão has grown a lot, we have over 140 new members».

On the other hand, he underlines, «the Portimão Section is well represented in the District Bodies (District Political Committee/Jurisdiction Board/Financial Audit Board/District Assembly)».

But, defends Pedro Xavier, «the PSD/Portimão reorganized itself, the Studies Office was created, led by comrade Virgílio Machado, with the objective of discussing in an impartial and rigorous way the problems of our council, but always pointing out solutions».

The List A candidate also underlines that "the [current] Political Commission has promoted the union of the growing social-democratic family through the organization of several events with enormous success with our militants, where reflection and conviviality prevailed."

In relation to the proposals presented over these two years, Pedro Xavier points out that «the PSD/Portimão came out the winner and with the work done. We made a virile opposition, fierce, but above all constructive, with the ultimate objective of benefiting the society of Portimo». Examples include “the creation of a social canteen, the creation of a school book bag and the creation of a temporary shelter”.

Obviously, List A also has the 2013 Local Elections in its horizon of objectives: «the situation in the country and in the Municipality of Portimão are the image of the bad management to which the PS has accustomed us. Within months, we will have a great challenge, that of preparing the 2013 municipal elections, which require a lot of work, dedication and effort. Only with a good team made up of competent men and women will we be able to overcome the next hurdle».

Helder Renato Rodrigues – In his letter to activists, Helder Renato outlines the objectives of his candidacy, which include winning, for the PSD, the Portimão Chamber, in the 2013 Local Elections: «We Want to Win Portimão in 2013! This objective can only be achieved with the involvement of all, without excluding anyone, in order to defeat those who have been at the forefront of Portimão's destinies and management (mismanagement) in the last three decades».

“What we want is to give credibility to the PSD in Portimão, to put it in its rightful place, which is the main political project of alternative to the Socialist Party in Portimão”, he adds.

But the leader of List B clarifies: "More than a personal candidacy, this is a candidacy of a team".

And it is in relation to the choice of the PSD candidate for the Autárquicas2013 that the list of Helder Renato Rodrigues assumes the main divergence in relation to the opposition list: «we understand that the choice of the main faces, or even of main face that will lead the credible alternative that we so much desire. We are aware that this decision cannot and should not be made without a more technical and fair basis».

But, underlines List B, "we believe that Portimonenses must clearly say and reflect with us who they think is the best prepared to lead the winning bid in the 2013 Local Elections!"

This, assumes Helder Renato, "one of the points of disagreement with the current direction of the PSD in Portimão, or at least the main one." “We did everything to get our ideas accepted. This was not possible! It is in ideas and reasons and not in people that we have this healthy divergence! We want a fair and transparent process where its rules are well defined, in accordance with the strategy of the National Political Commission defined in Congress and the District Political Commission presented in the District Assembly».
