The 9th Regional Environmental Education Meeting of the Algarve (9th EREAA), which has the theme “Education for Conservation – The Exodus in Context”, is scheduled for October 19th to 21st, at Zoomarine, and registration is already open.

October and migration, two words that go hand in hand from a biological point of view. But can migration be thought of in the context of education? This is the challenge associated with the 9th edition of REAAA.

According to the organization, in charge of the association Almargem, with the support of Zoomarine, this meeting intends to mark a change in the horizon of Environmental Education in the Algarve region, bringing, over three days of work, new visions, methods and approaches allied to the concept of Education for Conservation.

“At the height of autumnal migration for many species, we hope that it will also be an inspiration for the exodus of some dogmas and for the creation of an innovative and inspiring experience for all who participate in this event”, stresses the organization.

To open this Meeting, organized by Almargem, in partnership with Zoomarine, the documentary «Play Again», directed by Tonje Hessen Schei who has his debut in Portugal here.

The documentary takes a critical look at the importance of education in nature, in a society in which young people increasingly spend much of their time in front of the computer and television.

Ian Bride, specialist in Anthropology and Conservation at the University of Kent (UK), will be the speaker responsible for the lecture entitled “Environmental education: a tool for an end or an end in itself”, scheduled for the second day.

This communication aims to encourage the audience to face the concept of migration, in the context of the development of Environmental Education. Through an approach to traditional methodologies to the subject, reflections on how these promoted changes in our perception of the nature of learning and suggestions on frameworks and possibilities of how Environmental Education, formal and non-formal, can be viewed in the future.

Also on October 20, the space «Dialogs without a network» will take place, a challenge to the communication and creativity capacity of those who want to show their work to the community, which involves making a communication, in a maximum time of seven minutes, without recourse to PowerPoint or similar technology. The EREAA has prizes for the three most original and innovative presentations.

For the third and last day of the Meeting, several workshops are scheduled, in which, divided into groups, participants will address pertinent environmental issues, in order to develop pedagogically efficient communication tools.
