The mayor of Tavira this morning asked the Minister of Internal Affairs to declare a public calamity in the council, since "a third of the territory of Tavira is burned", due to the fire that broke out almost 48 hours ago in the Cachopo area.

Jorge Botelho, who this morning, around 3:00 am, met with Minister Miguel Macedo when he went to the command post installed in Cachopo, noted that the fire yesterday progressed rapidly to the south, circling more populated areas near the city of Tavira , underlining the great extent of the fire. The fire continues to maintain three active fronts.

This morning, as revealed to the Sul Informação the chief of staff of the mayor of Tavira, fire is still very active in the areas of Porto Carvalhoso, Julião, Picota, Feiteira and Cachopo (Tavira municipality) and also in Bengado and Arimbo (São Brás de Alportel).

José Graça added that "the roads are being cleaned in order to make them passable, being recommended to be careful because there are still traffic restrictions".

On the ground continue to fight the flames, according to the Civil Protection website, 635 men, supported by 151 vehicles that, at daybreak, are already counting on the support of aerial means to try to control the three fire fronts that are still active. .

The Portuguese authorities will once again ask Spain for the support of the Canadair plane that intervened in the theater of operations in the Serra de Tavira yesterday. However, the transfer of this air means depends on the assessment that the Spanish authorities make of their own risk.

This is already the third day of flames in the Serra de Tavira. The fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon, at 14:10 pm, in the area of Catraia.
